The New [Superfood] Kids on the Block (Part 5): Lucuma

This ancient superfood, now available in the USA, has the nickname of “The Gold of the Incas”.

To the Peruvian people, Lucuma is a symbol of both longevity and fertility. Lucuma is full of essential nutrients and can be used as a healthier substitute for sugar.

Lucuma, the quick, nutrition science bla-bla-bla……

Lucuma (Pouteria Lucuma) is a super fruit that has been eaten by Peruvians since 200 A.D. and possibly eaten as early as 2000 B.C., but modern science is just now getting a hint of how nutrient dense this fruit really is, and how it could offer great healing potential.

Lucuma contains beta carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium, and protein. Its maple-like taste makes it a sweet addition to smoothies, baked goods, and even ice cream. It is normally used as a powder.

Lucuma in its whole form….

……looks similar to an avocado, with a hard green exterior covering the sweet, soft fruit.

The flesh is yellow and has a texture that is slightly reminiscent to that of a dry egg yolk.

Many people say the taste of lucuma….

……..reminds them of a cross between caramel and a sweet potato. While it does contain a mellow sweetness, it’s low on the glycemic scale and typically suitable for diabetics.

Its soft taste and gentle aroma enhances most foods without directly influencing or impairing the overall taste of the recipe.

Tried and true ancient nutrition wisdom

In ancient records, lucuma fruit was said to be used to support skin health and digestion.

Lucuma was also used throughout the centuries to support cardiovascular health, and research seems to agree.

Recent studies have shown…

…..that lucuma oil may be helpful for supporting wound healing by encouraging the activation of healing factors within the skin.

Studies show that lucuma has potent ACE inhibitory activities in vitro, possibly decreasing the effects associated with hypertension.

Lucuma may also support normal blood sugar….

…..giving researchers hope for finding additional nutritional support for those with type II diabetes.

These results point to the excellent potential of Peruvian fruits as food-based strategies for blood sugar and blood pressure issues.

They call me Mr. Smooth[ie]

As I have said a gazillion times,  to take advantage of these amazing superfoods now popping up un the USA ……

……YOU GOTTA GET INTO DAILY SMOOTHIES!!!!

This superfood is perfect for my milkshake tasting daily smoothies, because its is mostly sold in powder form, and helps as a natural sweetener, and thus allowing me to add more broccoli and other things to my smoothie to help keep that “milkshaky” taste.

Update 9/2/16: Been using this for couple of months in my smoothies, I really like it be cause it seems to sweeten up the smoothie a fair [but not big] amount, and thus I can use less of my expensive Whole Foods frozen fruits and berries which I use to get a more fruity flavor. I personally don’t think it should be promoted as a natural sweetener, because it is not that sweet to me.  The sweetness it not blatant like sugar, so I don’t personally see it as anywhere near a sugar substitute or even a sweetener, it’s more mellow and smoothed out like mild caramel. Unfortunately, it does not mix well or dissolve completely in tea and coffee, so some people may be disappointed in this superfood from a practical sugar substitute perspective. I’d recommend coconut palm sugar to those people, though coconut palm sugar is not truly low calorie, and only “arguably” low glycemic, but more of an unprocessed, healthier, natural sugar. Nonetheless, adding Lucuma to my smoothies was great call!!!

Remember, “Doubt is their Greatest Weapon”…..

…..as one author recently titled his book on how the Pharmaceutical Industry, Modern Medicine, and the Processed Food Industry will do ANYTHING in their power to convince us that these miracles of nature are a hoax or a scam.

Big Business is actually paying people to spread confusion on the web as these new Superfoods try to take root in the lucrative USA market to compete with their manufactured and processed foods and laboratory made medicines.

They are even coming after me and my blog now…..sigh :(
