So, umm, Here’s the story of why I recorded this song, True Story…..
….see I can honestly say, I’ve never been anywhere near any kind of fulfilling relationship ever in my life.
But if I have to leave this planet anytime soon…
…at least I can say I got a “Kiss From a Rose”
Basically, the story goes, I’m at my fav’ venue, Dimitrius Jazz Alley in Seattle, I always sit at the bar, they got about 10 barstools…
…nice little setup, you can eat, drink, and watch the Concert at the bar, a very nice intimate venue with an amazing sound system.
Anyhoo, there is this beautiful woman who is always at the bar at the same shows I’m at (she’s the splitting image of that actress Paula Patton)
…Will Downing, Jeffrey Osbourne, Take 6, India Arie, she’s always there, can’t write her name cause she’s engaged to come “cat”.
…we’re always having stress-free, cool conversations before and after the show, sharing appetizers during the show, she’s such a warm, pleasant chick.
I once joked to her, “You know, you’re too fine to be so friendly, it would be easier for me to deal with you if you were a Diva stuck on herself….”
I became obsessed with why this heavenly creature was always by herself, I find out she and her fiancee have this thing where they do things separately.
I deduce over time, that this dude, whomever he is, got a ton of money, you know how that script goes.
She was more talkative than normal at that last show, after more than a few drinks, she tells me she’s “unfulfilled” in her relationship…
…but as we know, some women will marry into money and comfort, and figure out those emotions later.
I try to give her my enlightened Brotha’s perspective that male energy is “front loaded”.
….in that we really, really want that woman in that first 2-3 months….
Over time, male physical energy can fade, men often find those first few months more exciting than an extended relationship or marriage over time…
…plus, she is too fine for most dudes to waste time getting into her mind
(I explained she’s more of what we call a “Trophy Wife”)
Fast forward to after that last show, I’m walking her to her car, I actually forgot what led me up to playfully “making my move”…
…I was joking around when I put my arm around her waist, and said some “fake cool” line, (when you an “Old School Playa’, you can say whatever…)
I was expecting her to pull back…
…but she surprised me and came straight at me and planted this huge kiss on me, kinda caught me off guard.
After this “God knows how long” kiss, she jokingly asked me “So how was it, the kiss…” ?
I responded, “To quote my boy Seal, ‘I compare you to a ‘Kiss From a Rose’ ” (…it popped in my head, “Hmmm, that would be a cool song to cover”)
She gives me a ride home [In the most “Badass” Mercedes I ever been in], and before I get out of the car, we’re going at it again, for God knows how long.
Then I throw my Larenz Tate from “Love Jones” line on her, “Hey, I just want you to come upstairs so we can talk…” (then a sarcastic chuckle…)
She laughs hard, but declines to come upstairs, saying she gotta get home cause Ol’ Boy will expecting her.
Then, strangely, she thanks me, I asked why, she said, “Because you see me…”
Going up on my elevator [alone 🙁 ] , with an “SMH” and a smile, chalk up another of my countless “close, but not to be” romantic encounters.
I lamented to myself, Doug, you should go to Vegas, you’d probably be really “Lucky at Cards” (do some Googling if you never heard that phrase).
But why was I smiling? Because no matter whatever else happens in this crazy ass journey of love and life…
…at least I can say, I got a “Kiss From a Rose”.

Don’t know that I will ever listen to “Kiss From A Rose” again without thinking of this post! There is nobody like Seal and I suspect there is nobody like you either! Keep the faith and here’s believing you won’t be lucky at cards forever!
Hi JA (Jeffrey Annes),
LOL!! For people that don’t know, the full phrase that I mentioned partially in the article is “If you lucky at cards, you’re probably unlucky in love” (and vice versa).
I don’t complain about anything though, because I’m basically lucky with everything else. Lucky in health and wellness (never been sick), Lucky in finding jobs (I just found a new job even in the midst of the COVID-19 mass unemployment), lucky to always be able to inspire myself (as you can see from the video), and lucky to be just a happy person in a world of chaos.
So, I just enjoy the crazy journey of life an find the humor in all my experiences, I’ve learned I just had to keep my soul pure, and that will stay with me forever no matter what happens.
Oh and also lucky to realize that happiness is not dependent on finding another person, I mean if you find a woman to share your current state of happiness, then cool, if not, you still gotta be a happy soul. and that’s me in a nutshell….
Peace Brother…

Doug, love this post. Hopefully that’s not the last kiss from your rose. So glad you didn’t say something like, Can I holla at you? Yep, there are some fellas still using this lame line.♀️ Anyhoo, keep us posted, and stay safe!

Hi Lory,
Thanks for writing me again (strange enough, I get so little communication on the site’s comments and social media, but that’s OK, the site is my passion and my expression).
But to your comment, LOL!!! Naw, “Let Me Holla'” is not me, that sounds like one of those old characters from the old “Martin” sitcom. I’m not really a “cool dude” at the core, but I know how to play it smooth and cool and Gentlemanly. I’m like most guys in some ways, but never been the type to “break my neck” trying to get some play.
I must have talked to that woman at 7 or 8 shows before I even tried to hit on her and even then I was joking around, because I cant take the “Boy-Girl” game seriously anymore. I think that’s why she gravitated towards me, because I wasn’t all over her like every other guy, though like every other guy, I sure wanted to be, I just played it casual and cool…
But, as long as any experience or encounter with a woman is genuine expression, then I’m fine with that.

Hey Doug, this is in response to the “I just played it casual and cool,” quote taken from your post. There is a term for that. Back in the day, we called it a Smooth Operator! Lol, Stay safe!

Hi Lory,
No Doubt!!!
I guess I’m trying to say I’m not really truly “Cool” or “Smooth” at the core, but the older you get, you’re at least smooth enough to let your energy come out like that. You know, it’s like your clothes and hair over time. You know after your 40’s what works for you, you now how to use what you got.
But “My Rose” made it easy, she had such a friendly warmth, so easy to talk to. But she is by societal standards very attractive, so in reality I was dying inside, desperately trying not to be frantic. I told her once that “I don’t know how you do it”. Meaning, not so sure why she is so open and talkative, because soon as she speaks to a guy he’s gonna be sweating her, and most women that attractive just don’t speak at all, the only way to keep the wolves off of them. Nice looking girl, but at the same time, very beautiful spirit, you can run across one or the other in this day and age, but rarely if ever both in the same person.
I won’t let the cat out of the bag but I’m gonna pay tribute to the “Smooth Operator” in my next song. Look for it sometime in second half of June.
