I’m betting absolutely zero people will care about my “music dilemma”…
…but I’ll type it anyway.
See, I’m up to about 350 songs on my long list of songs that would be a great cover songs for me to record…
…but I like the slow, therapeutic groove of taking my time and doing about 4-6 a year (Making a song is like making romance, you don’t rush through it)
Nonetheless, based on my calculations, at this rate, I’ll be 182 years old before I get all these songs done….
…but, I had a spontaneous stroke of creative genius, to consolidate several of my fav’ Sade songs on my long list into one song.
Anyhooze, so far as the lady herself, Ms. Sade Adu, immo’ have to break it down to you young cats who equate sex appeal to someone like Nikki Minaj…..
(I’m not hating on, or judging you young Brothas’, just breaking down sex appeal from an “Old School Playa’s” perspective…..)
First of all, when Sade was hit the scene in the mid 80’s, literally EVERY guy fell in love with her…
….no matter what our race, creed, color, or religion.
I just took an impromptu “Old School vs. New School” video sex appeal test. I just pulled up a random Nikki Minaj video, “Anaconda”…
I mean. OK, I get it, fake Tits and Ass for days, I’m a guy, immo’ look, but I only made it through 60 seconds (well, maybe 90 seconds, that’s a lotta Ass!)
Next, I played that first video embedded below, Sade’s “Smooth Operator”. Now that’s more like it! Let me pour a glass of Cognac and watch it again!!
See, Sade didn’t have to do any of that raunchy Nikki Minaj stuff to have every man back in the 80’s and 90’s under her spell.
Sade gave us maybe at best, a set of 6 pack abs, a nice form fitting 2 piece outfit, the most juicy lips in music, and that’s it, no cleavage or nothing…
…but Sade had this hypnotic power, like a Genie coming out a bottle, or a Snake Charmer, or a Mermaid, a Seductress!!! Sade owned the “mental game”.
I saw this with mine own eyes in 1985 at a Sade concert in Chicago, but one of Sade’s costumes was a full length black trench coat, body totally covered…
…and she still had every dude at the show drooling!! (had to go back and find a photo of that outfit, ‘cuz if you never saw her show, you’d never believe me!!)
Much of her power was in her voice, deep and raspy, sultry, intoxicating, she was the only singer that could give me an erection just from her voice alone…
(Sorry if TMI, but I’m on a roll!!! But just curious, could Nikki Minaj do that to you by voice alone? LOL!!!)
I never got the impression Sade was intended to be, or marketed as a Soul Singer, she was more of a Soulful Pop Artist or “Adult Contemporary” artist…
…but in line with her Bi-Racial heritage, Blacks felt like part of her was “ours”.
Because, with Black Music and Black Radio, whomever you are, if you got that real soul, we’ll accept you…
(remember Teena Marie? Straight up white, not a sex symbol, but well respected for what she brought to the R&B Music game)…
…but if you’re faking the Soul, we gonna hear it and ridicule you for all eternity. (Just ask Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice).
Take Mariah Carey. I mean, she’s not disliked, tight body, I got a few of her cuts, but her sound always felt like she is trying too hard to be a Soul Singer.
I’ve been enjoying soulful female singers for near 5 decades now, ever since, say, the post-Dianna Ross and the Supremes era…
..and its been some great ones that came and went, and a few still here.
Anita Baker is mostly forgotten, but could throw down, I personally liked Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill’s game was tight, I like Mary J Blige. Whitney? neah…
I’m a big Alicia Keys fan, I love Erykah Badu’s uniqueness, my girl Jill Scott can blow, I’m not a Beyonce fan, but I acknowledge she’s a goddess to some…
…and there are some talented “rookies” coming in, like Lianne La Havas.
But, in writing my definitive statement, my version of music history for posterity, comparing all these great Soul Singers to Sade, all I can say is….
“THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH SKILL, TO KILL, THE KING OF THE HILL”
Or should that be “QUEEN OF THE HILL” ???
Life, just like music, is all about…..
“…finding your ‘Frequency’ “
“…finding your ‘Vibration’ “
“…finding your ‘Wavelength’ “
