Doug, these burgers look awesome!  And I have never been on Rt 66.  I think it should be one of those things on my list to do before I die.  🙂

Route 66 still exists, but is no longer a true cross country highway, in many places it is no less than an unpaved country road. There are sections of it that have been restored in various states as a National Historic and Scenic Site. As a matter of fact, in Oklahoma, there are places where they call it the "Sidewalk Highway" because the they only build a one lane road in the 20's to save money, and now the road is overgrown and unmaintained and looks like a sidewalk. It's a pretty interesting site. Since many areas are now national "Scenic Sites" there are many possibilities of jumping off the interstate and driving a piece of Route 66. Oklahoma might be the best bet because the look and feel of the state gives the best glimpse of the road in the 30's and 40's. We stopped off at a vegetable stand on 66 and I bought a tomato that was a big as a grapefruit. Being from Chicago, we were actually freaked out at how friendly the people in Oklahoma and Texas were to a carload of black people from Chicago. But as John Cougar says in the song, "Ain't that America". True southern hospitality 🙂
