F.Y.I. I don't think the girl in the photo above is over 40, I just thought it was a cool picture 🙂
Anyhoo, maca is a relatively unknown superfood, great for adults of all ages, but probably is a superfood that everyone over 40 should know about.
Sold in a very pleasant smelling powder form, a tablespoon can easily be added to smoothies, cereal, yogurt, or can be taken in capsules.
Beneficial effects for both women and for men, through helping fight PMS and menopause problems with women, and studies suggest from lab rat testing that it can shrink the size of the prostate in men.
Growing at 14,000 feet in Peru where nothing else grows, it evolved to be a very hearty plant to survive the harsh conditions, and is packed with vitamins and nutrients. I buy my maca at Nuts.com, or at the Raw Guru or at Natural Zing I have to keep a couple of online stores in queue because it is very common for web stores to go out of stock with maca. It's getting popular. Before I got into red Maca I bought my regular maca (yellow maca) at Imperial Gold. I HIGHLY recommend Imperial Gold online company if you are going to try yellow maca. Remember, when they don't specify color, it's normally yellow maca and that's ok, unless you a man, and want to get the effects of red maca helping prostate health. Red and black maca are new on the scene, so most companies will only have yellow.
Red maca is an important part of my everyday power smoothies that give me nutrition, energy, and make a perfect morning meal and after workout replinishment. I'll probably be taking maca forever.
You're already on the web, do a little homework and research this one. It seems, because it grows at such a high altitude, and is forced to be such a strong, rugged plant, the nutrients that it stores are nature's way of replenishing chemicals and nutrients that both males and females lose as we get older. It seem that PMS and menopause issues for women, and enlarged prostate issues for men are (based on some studies) merely chemical imbalances that maca can play a major part in getting us back to balance.
Remember, there is a red maca, black maca, and a yellow maca, and any of the 3 are great to use. They are all slightly different in their chemical components, but I currently use the red because of the studies showing red maca shrinks the prostate in mice. The red is the only one of the three which that does that, although each of the three mostly have similar health and healing properties.
Some companies sell a maca blend that is a mix of the three types, and some people mix their own. If the type is not specified, then it is probably yellow maca so just go with that. I remember that it gave me such a noticeable sense of "well being" when I started using it, like I was more "in balance". It was funny because I was compelled to get up a t 6am and run on the treadmill, funny.
Special "shout out " to the hot babe above whose picture I borrowed for my Maca article. I ran across the photo when looking for pictures of maca plants. Her name is Tatianna and she has a great blog called Loving Fit. Check out her blog and read more about maca in her article. Damn, something about a woman with a six pack. Keep it real Tatianna, keep it real!!!!!.
Read my article on how maca can be purchased roasted, and made into a great "coffee like" drink
Red Maca is in my personal list of "My Top 10 'Fountain of Youth" Superfoods". These superfoods are from all over the world, but are readily available and accessible for purchase in the United States to help us cheat "Father Time", with the help of "Mother Nature".
As with everything else, FAKE MACA seems to be coming in from China….sigh. I'll update article as i get more info
